 Alternatives to the Basic Paper Weave

Level II Weaving: The "Zig-Zag" Weave

Teaching weaving is not the easiest thing in the world. I like Cassie Stephens' GIANT paper weaving loom. If the laminator roll wasn't out, I would do that but for now, I'm going to show you a few techniques before and beyond the basic weave. Then, I am going to show off a few basic weave projects that might get you excited about weaving.


The basic paper weave always requires paper, scissors, a pencil, and a ruler. From there, you can get creative. Fun scissors? Go for it! Interesting paper? YES! Pencils, pens, markers, OH MY! Rulers, well, I like the clear ones with the grid so I can line everything up easily. I also recommend a paper cutter for speed and accuracy. 
FOLD YOUR PAPER HAMBURGER STYLE! Exciting right? 

Line up an inch and draw your stopping point. Not pictured, but my new favorite trick is to do the "OCTOPUS HAND" when measuring! WOW! I wish I had thought of this!

 
Write your name above this line and make perpendicular lines spaced an inch apart.


Slice your hamburger folded masterpiece on the lines.


Here's where it gets tricky, the weave goes Over one Under 2. 
OR Over 2: Under 1. Think about it. I feel like it would be rather tricky to teach. I can't wait to challenge my students with this on a "Scribble Workshop" or stations day. 



Here's me during class! YAY! Also, see how I had already messed up at the bottom right. But once you get it, it kind of works? It takes focus for this one.

I was stuck here and I wasn't sure what to do so I just copied what I had already done previously. It turned out, I guess?

Level 0 Weaving: Secret Compartment Cards


For our SECOND TRICK! This is my favorite way to scaffold it for younger students. KINDERGARTEN! You need 3 colors of construction paper, scissors, a pencil, and maybe a ruler. It depends on if your kiddos can handle rulers, mine were not quite ready. 




Fold it into fourths.


Cut 2 "fourths" of the other pieces of paper. These are what you're weaving with.

Cut THREE lines. You can cut more, but you're askin' for trouble. 



Weave your paper strips. And draw a design. It's spring right now so how about a fancy egg? Or maybe a conejo, which means rabbit in Spanish. 


In your secret compartment, write something exciting! 


There are secret compartments on BOTH sides!

  This was quite the adventure but this project broke me. It was a lot. I am not a fan of weaving. I will say it now. But, getting a pedicure and weaving made it fun.  I added 2 inches to each side of the pillow so it was about 18.5 all the way around. I used a t-square to measure it out.  My handy cardboard cutter was key! When making a loom for something this large, it's handy to use a heavy-duty cardboard.  MY cutter is the BEST!! Then I used a 1/2 inch spacing for the warp strings.  I started with regular yarn and switched to thick yarn.  I got a pedicure and brought my weaving. That was interesting but it made the process more pleasant. My hands are absolutely killing me.  I ran out of yarn and took the rest of the afternoon off to get my marriage license in Independence.  I bought some more yarn and turned on a movie.  Pirates of the Caribbean is a good series to go through and finish the weaving.  ...

Lithographs: Making tiny wallpaper

Mini musuem with mini wallpaper!! The relief printing technique is basically making stamps.  The ink goes on top of the incision instead of wiping ink into the incisions.  Last year was the first year I experimented with linocuts. In my art room at Westwood View, I didn't know exactly what I had in the supply closet but I figured it out. I ended up making a few awesome projects with my students that I hadn't tried myself. I never took printmaking in my undergrad butbindid make some AMAZING collograph plates at a class in the Nelson Atkins in a middle school art class. I remembet it because it was one of the coolest mediums I had worked with. I could draw with shapes. I love that. A lot of printmaking is really tedious in my mind but I'm really calling the kettle black if you look at some of my paintings. To each their own and all that. Feeling Sketchy: Sketchbooks part 1

Who's feeling sketchy?  Hello Audience!  This week's assignment for my art education class is to blog about two sketchbooks we made in class and include a few photos. I've split it up into 2 posts because this one is rather lengthy.  First, I'll tell you what I do with my sketchbooks. Second, the people (my social media friends and a few students) tell me what they would do or have done in or with sketchbooks. Third, I'm going to show you how to make A FANCY SKETCHBOOK! Oh La LA!
